Salary Negotiation Tips
Our firm has published many newsletter articles on the art of negotiation. As our clients continue to receive new job offers, here are a few tips on maximizing the outcomes of your salary negotiations, from Robin’s book, How to Negotiate a Killer Job Offer:
Know your value but don’t focus on the money.
Instead, focus on creating rapport and a good connection with your interviewer. Make them see you as the solution to the company’s/their problem – then the money discussion will flow.
Compensation is a package of items – base salary, bonus, commissions, long-term incentives, “perks,” benefits, etc. Understand what can be negotiated and prioritize what matters most to you.
Know why the company is hiring for this role – where the pain is that it is trying to alleviate. Be prepared to describe how you are the right person to give the company what it wants and needs.
Be honest about your experience, skills and abilities. If the company catches you in a lie, you don’t want to deal with the repercussions to your reputation and your career.
Use positive words – nothing is a problem that cannot be overcome!
