Are You Paid What You're Worth?

Robin Bond recently published an article in the August issue of Main Line Today magazine on how to get paid what you are worth. You can read the article here, or in the text below.

Are you paid what you deserve? Most people will tell you they're not.  Negotiating a raise is tough because the product you're haggling over is YOU. Here are some ways to detach yourself from pay negotiations and get what you want:

1)      Did you really pull a rabbit out of a hat if no one saw you do it? Keep a log of your achievements throughout the year, and use objective, measurable data to justify your ask. Don’t count on your boss to notice every great thing you do. Make sure the priorities you tout are aligned with those of your boss and the company.

2)      Research the market to know your worth. An employment attorney can be helpful here.  Look at total compensation, although base pay is usually the most important. Know what pay level various job titles and skills command in the region and industry where you work.

3)      Practice how you ask. At Transition Strategies, we often write sample negotiation scripts to help clients navigate this stressful process. We also craft Plan B asks in case you are not able to secure exactly what you are seeking.

When hiring attorneys, remember, it's not just about litigation. You want someone to have your best interests in mind and be able to capably guide you, either behind the scenes or at the negotiating table – and to do so without burning bridges.
